# Period close

> Review yesterday's blockers and close the month from the Period close workspace.

**Period close** is where you review yesterday and close the month. The [fiscal calendar](https://www.adorabl.info/books/setup/fiscal-calendar.md) defines the year and the cutoff. This screen is where you work the list, close the period, and lock it.

## Prerequisites

* The [fiscal calendar](https://www.adorabl.info/books/setup/fiscal-calendar.md) is saved for the year you are closing, including **Close by business day** and **Auto-close cutoff (UTC)**.
* You are an owner, admin, controller, or accountant in the organization.

## Open Period close

**1. Navigate**

1. In the sidebar, open **Finance**.
2. Click **Period Close**.

Reopen and unlock are also on the fiscal calendar, each with a reason.

## Daily soft close

The **Daily soft close** tile is yesterday's status for the active organization.

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Closed** | No connected check that blocks the day has open items |
| **Open** | Blocking items are still open, and the cutoff has not passed |
| **Overdue** | Blocking items are still open after the fiscal calendar cutoff |

The table under the tiles is the checklist. Click a row to open that check.

| Impact | What it means |
| - | - |
| **Blocks the day** | Counted in the soft-close status. Includes unmatched bank and card lines, unreleased draft documents, documents on hold, unapplied cash receipts, and failed feeds or missing inputs. |
| **Payment only** | Does not block the day. Includes 3-way match exceptions (billed quantity above posted receipts) and sensitive master-data changes to verify. |
| **Non-blocking** | Informational. Includes potential duplicate suppliers. |

A row marked **Not connected** is not treated as clear. **Uncoded transactions** and **Approvals pending** stay in the list until those sources are connected. Do not read a dash in **Items** as "nothing to do."

## Month-end hard close

The **Month-end hard close** tile is the checklist for the fiscal period that contains yesterday. Click it to open that period's tasks.

**1. Finish the tasks you own**

Tasks badged **N · Manual** are yours to complete. Enter an internal evidence path, then click **Mark done**. Use **Start** to mark one in progress.

Tasks badged **Y** wait for a validated job. You cannot mark those done by hand. **Final review and sign-off** is the exception: click **Sign off** when the rest of the list is ready.

**2. Clear period blockers**

**Close period** stays off until every task is done and the period has no close blockers. The hint under the button names what is left: sign-off, open tasks, source validations, or period blockers.

**3. Close**

Click **Close period**. The period moves to **Closed** and postings dated in it are rejected.

**4. Lock when final**

After the statements are issued, click **Lock period**. A locked period needs an unlock reason before anyone can reopen it.

Closing the period stops posting for every module. Reopening turns every module back on.

## Reopen a closed period

1. On a **Closed** period, enter a reason and click **Reopen period**.
2. Post the adjustment.
3. Close the period again.

A **Locked** period needs **Unlock period** and a reason first. adorabl records who reopened or unlocked the period and why.

## Example: Trail Ridge Outfitters

Trail Ridge closes March on the third business day of April:

1. Each morning in April, **Daily soft close** shows unmatched bank lines and two draft bills. AP posts the bills and reconciliation clears the bank lines. The tile moves to **Closed** once those blockers are gone.
2. On the March checklist, the controller marks the manual tasks done, signs off **Final review and sign-off**, and clicks **Close period**.
3. After statements go out, they click **Lock period**.
4. In May an auditor asks for a reclass. The controller unlocks with the reason `Audit reclass — freight`, reopens, posts the journal entry, and closes and locks March again.

## Troubleshooting

> **Close period stays disabled**
>
> The hint under the buttons names what is left: a task that is not done, final sign-off, source validations, or period blockers. Mark every manual task done, then close.

> **A posting fails with a period error**
>
> The transaction date falls in a closed or locked period. Change the date, or reopen the period if policy allows.

> **A daily check shows Not connected**
>
> That source is not wired yet. It is not a zero. Clear the connected checks that block the day, and do not treat the unconnected rows as finished work.

> **Close or the checklist is unavailable**
>
> Period close is limited to owners, admins, controllers, and accountants. Ask an admin to grant one of those roles.
