# Dimensions

> Configure accounting dimensions for reporting.

Dimensions add reporting tags — cost center, region, project, or custom values — to GL transactions. Use them when you need more detail than the GL Account alone.

Transaction line grids for journal entries, invoices, and bills capture **GL Account**, **Segments**, and **Dimensions** separately. adorabl joins selected values for display and validates them when you save or post. Only active dimensions offer values in line grids.

## Open dimensions setup

**1. Navigate**

1. Open **Settings** → **Finance**.
2. Click **Dimensions** under General ledger.

## Create a dimension

**1. Define the dimension**

1. Click **Add dimension**.
2. Enter a **Name** and short **Code** (for example, `Project` / `PROJ`).
3. Switch **Required** on if every transaction in scope must include this dimension. Leave it off to make the dimension optional at posting.

**2. Choose a value source**

| Source | When to use |
| - | - |
| **Master data** | Values come from an existing entity (customers, suppliers, items) |
| **Custom list** | You maintain your own code and label pairs |

Add custom values with a code, label, and active flag.

**3. Set segment scope**

Limit the dimension to specific GL Accounts, cost centers, or regions — or apply it to **all** values in a segment.

Scoping keeps optional dimensions off transactions that do not need them.

**4. Save the dimension**

Save the dimension and its values. The choices become available immediately on supported transaction line grids; you do not need to pre-generate account combinations.

## Where dimensions apply

After setup, dimensions can be required on:

* Invoice and bill lines (configured on [Receivables setup](https://www.adorabl.info/accounts-receivable/setup/receivables-setup.md) and [Payables setup](https://www.adorabl.info/accounts-payable/setup/payables-setup.md))
* Manual journal entries
* Dynamically resolved account combinations on the [Chart of accounts](https://www.adorabl.info/books/chart-of-accounts.md)

Required dimensions must have a valid value before the transaction can post — adorabl checks every line where that dimension applies, including entries generated by bills, invoices, and inventory postings, and rejects the post with the missing dimension named. A line whose account is outside the dimension's scope, including an accounts payable or accounts receivable offset, can post without that dimension. Optional dimensions can be left blank. A value that is outside the configured scope is still rejected.

> [!TIP]
>
> Start with one or two dimensions — cost center and region — before adding custom dimensions. Too many required fields slow down data entry.
