# Fiscal calendar

> Set up your fiscal year and accounting periods.

The fiscal calendar sets the year, the posting periods, and the close cutoff. Close and lock a period from [Period close](https://www.adorabl.info/books/period-close.md). This page is where you reopen or unlock one, with a reason. Set it up before Trail Ridge Outfitters posts bills, invoices, or journal entries.

## Open fiscal calendar setup

**1. Navigate**

1. Open **Settings** → **Finance**.
2. Click **Fiscal calendar (Jan–Dec)** under General ledger.

## Choose year structure

Pick the calendar shape that matches how you report:

| Type | Best for |
| - | - |
| **Calendar year** | 12 monthly periods, January through December |
| **Fiscal year** | 12 monthly periods starting in a custom month |
| **4-4-5 retail** | 13 periods of four, four, and five weeks |

**1. Set the fiscal year**

1. Select the year structure.
2. Enter the **Fiscal year** (for example, `2026`).
3. Choose the **Start month** if using a fiscal or retail calendar.
4. Save. adorabl stores the posting periods for that year — each row under **Posting periods** shows the period name, start and end dates, and status.

## Close settings

| Setting | Purpose |
| - | - |
| **Close by business day** | Business day of the month when close tasks are due |
| **Auto-close on cutoff** | When on, adorabl closes periods automatically at the cutoff time |
| **Auto-close cutoff (UTC)** | Time of day for auto-close (default 23:59 UTC) |
| **Allow post-close adjustments** | When on, users with a finance role can post adjusting entries to closed periods |

## Posting periods

Every posting — journal entries, bills, invoices, payments, receipts, shipments, and inventory transactions — is checked against the period that contains its date. A period has one of three statuses:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Open** | Postings allowed |
| **Closed** | No postings. **Reopen Period** asks for a reason. |
| **Locked** | No postings. **Unlock Period** asks for a reason, and returns the period to **Closed**. |

Closing a period stops posting for accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory, and cash together. Reopening turns posting back on for all of them.

### Reopen or unlock

On a **Closed** row, enter a reason and click **Reopen Period**. On a **Locked** row, enter a reason and click **Unlock Period**. adorabl records who did it and why. Owners, admins, controllers, and accountants can reopen or unlock.

**Close period** and **Lock period** are on [Period close](https://www.adorabl.info/books/period-close.md), with the checklist of tasks and blockers.

> [!WARNING]
>
> A posting dated in a closed or locked period is rejected with a message naming the period. Change the date or reopen the period; do not back-date around the control.

## During month-end

Use [Period close](https://www.adorabl.info/books/period-close.md) for the full close workflow once your books are ready.
