# Journal entry types

> Maintain the type list used on manual journal entries.

**Journal entry types** classify manual journal entries — for example **Standard**, **Accrual**, or **Depreciation**. Each organization keeps its own list under Finance setup. A manual entry needs a type before it can post. Reversals and system postings use **Standard** when no type is chosen.

## Open Journal entry types

**1. Navigate**

1. Open **Settings** → **Finance**.
2. Under General ledger, click **Journal entry types**.

## Maintain the list

| Action | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Add** | Create a type with a name. Names are unique in the organization. |
| **Rename** | Change the label on an existing type. |
| **Active** | Turn a type off so it no longer appears on new entries. Keep at least one type active. |

## On a journal entry

The journal entry header includes **Type**. Choose a type on every manual draft before you post. See [Journal entries](https://www.adorabl.info/books/journal-entries.md).
