# Item GL defaults

> Organization-wide inventory, COGS, and revenue accounts now live on Default GL accounts.

Organization-wide inventory, cost of goods sold, and revenue accounts live on [Default GL accounts](https://www.adorabl.info/books/setup/system-accounts.md#item-gl-accounts), in **Item GL accounts**. The old Item GL defaults address opens that page.

## Open item GL accounts

**1. Navigate**

1. Open **Settings** → **Finance**.
2. Click **Default GL Accounts**.
3. Find **Item GL accounts**.

| Role | When adorabl uses it |
| - | - |
| **Inventory Asset account** | Inventory value on receipt, and the credit when stock ships |
| **COGS / non-stock expense account** | Cost of goods sold, or the expense on a non-stock item |
| **Sales / Revenue account** | Revenue when an invoice posts |

## Inheritance

* New items pick up these accounts automatically.
* **Item categories** can override a role for every item in that category. The category shows **Override** or **Inherit** on **Inventory GL**, **COGS GL**, and **Revenue GL**.
* An item record can override the category.

## Example for Trail Ridge Outfitters

| Role | Example account |
| - | - |
| Inventory | `1300` Inventory — finished goods |
| COGS | `5010` Cost of goods sold |
| Revenue | `4010` Product revenue |
