# Units of measure

> Buy, sell, and stock items in different units with automatic conversion.

Units of measure let you transact an item in a different unit than you stock it — for example, buy in cases, stock in eaches, and sell in eaches. adorabl converts quantities and prices automatically and always stores each line in the item's base unit so inventory and GL stay consistent.

## How it works

* You define a shared list of units for the organization (for example, Each, Case, Pallet).
* On each item you pick a **base unit** (how stock is counted) and optional **purchase** and **sales** units, plus the conversion factors between them.
* On a purchase order, receipt, bill, or invoice line, you choose the unit for that line. adorabl re-quotes the price or cost for the chosen unit and records both the entered quantity and the base-unit quantity.
* [Stock on hand](https://www.adorabl.info/products/stock-on-hand.md) and item records restate on-hand quantities in each configured unit for display — storage remains in the base unit.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Documents snapshot the conversion factor at the time they are entered. Changing an item's conversions later never restates historical purchase orders, receipts, or bills.

## Define the organization's units

**1. Open Units of measure setup**

1. In the sidebar, open **Data & Admin** → **Settings**.
2. Open **Inventory** setup.
3. Click **Units of Measure**.

**2. Add a unit**

Click to add a new unit, then enter a short code and name (for example, `CS` · Case) and pick a **Dimension** — **Count**, **Weight**, **Volume**, **Length**, **Time**, or **Other**. Save the record.

Repeat for every unit you buy, stock, or sell in. Common starting units are **Each**, **Case**, and **Pallet**.

The **Inventory setup** checklist shows Units of Measure as configured once at least one unit exists.

### Weight and volume units

The **Dimension** column tells adorabl which units describe a quantity and which describe a physical measure. adorabl seeds common weight units (`G`, `OZ`, and others) and volume units (`ML`, `GAL`, `CF`, `M3`) with the right dimension. Items use **Weight** and **Volume** units for their **Landed cost factors** — the unit weight and unit volume that default allocation factors when freight or duty is spread by weight or volume. See [Items](https://www.adorabl.info/products/items.md#landed-cost-factors) and [Landed cost](https://www.adorabl.info/purchasing/landed-cost.md).

Dimensions label the units; they do not convert between them. Keep one weight unit and one volume unit in use across your catalog so factors compare like for like.

## Set units on an item

**1. Choose base, purchase, and sales units**

Open an item and, on **Details**, set the **base unit** (how you count stock). Optionally set a **purchase unit** and a **sales unit** if you buy or sell in a different unit.

**2. Add conversions**

Open the item's **Units** tab and add a conversion factor for each alternate unit — for example, 1 Case = 12 Each. You can also record a unit-specific SKU here.

The Items list shows a **Base unit** column so you can confirm units at a glance. See [Items](https://www.adorabl.info/products/items.md).

## Use units on purchasing documents

On purchase order, receipt, and bill line grids, a **Unit** column lets you pick the unit per line:

* Changing the unit re-quotes the line price or cost for that unit.
* Received and billed quantities display in the line's entered unit.
* The quantity is still stored in the item's base unit behind the scenes for inventory and GL.

See [Purchasing](https://www.adorabl.info/purchasing/purchase-orders-and-receipts.md) and [Bills & adjustments](https://www.adorabl.info/accounts-payable/bills-and-adjustments.md).

## Use units on AR invoice lines

Invoice line grids include a **UOM** column with the same behavior as bills and purchase orders — pick the unit per line, and adorabl converts quantity and unit price using the item's conversion factors.

See [Invoices & adjustments](https://www.adorabl.info/accounts-receivable/invoices-and-adjustments.md).

## Example: Trail Ridge Outfitters

Trail Ridge buys water bottles by the case but stocks and sells them individually:

| Item | Base unit | Purchase unit | Conversion |
| - | - | - | - |
| `BV-1042-BLK` · Bevel bottle | Each | Case | 1 Case = 24 Each |

On a purchase order, the buyer enters **10** in **Case**. adorabl stores 240 Each on hand after receipt and re-quotes the per-case cost so the bill total is correct.

## Troubleshooting

> **No Unit column on a line**
>
> Confirm the item has a base unit and at least one conversion on its **Units** tab. Without conversions, the line uses the base unit only.

> **A conversion change didn't update an old document**
>
> That is intentional. Each document snapshots the conversion factor when it is entered, so historical documents are never restated.
